How is Aloe Vera Produced?

After we get more understanding about usage of Aloe Vera, let`s keep moving. There are two methods. Either the whole leaf is ground up and then filtered to remove the solid matter, then passed through carbon filters to remove all the anthraquinone fraction. Alternatively, the sappy fraction and gel is filtered out of the leaf to produce liquid/gel containing a small amount of anthraquinon.

Whichever method is used, the next stage is sterilization either by heat or by chemical means in order to preserve the product and prevent the spoilage. A common method is to add ascorbic acid (vitamin C) which not only inhabits plant enzymes but also prevents oxidation of the phenolic components of Aloe, preventing darkening of the product. Some preservative is necessary (often sodium benzoate or potassium sorbate) to enhance the shelf-life of the product, and chelating agents -which bind some of the minerals present -may be added to reduce any catalyst activity.

The result is a product which is sufficiently stable againts physical, chemical and microbial change. The product is then bottled (perhaps with some flavouring addedd) for drinking, or added to creams and lotions for topical use. However, buyers should beware that poorer quality Aloe is produced if the product is excessively heat or chemically treated, with degradation of some of the biologically active compounds.
